Love of teaching dance brings Haudenschild-Wise back to business - Akron Beacon Journal

MILLERSBURG — Her love for teaching dance and the right opportunity to re-open her once thriving dance studio has led veteran dance instructor Jenyce Haudenschild-Wise to get back into business.

Opening in January, 2020, after a five-year hiatus, Jenyce is anxious to pick up where she left off.

"I started back the second week of January and we’re already picking up a pretty good clientele," Jenyce said. Her dance instruction takes place in the same studio at 308 N. Washington St.

"I want kids to dance, and the educational qualities we offer, I want a comfortable place for them to come, where parents can trust my education," Jenyce said. "My way worked for more than 30 years, and this is a wonderful location. God has given me a gift to teach dance, and I wanted to continue doing what I’ve always done."

Jenyce’s School of Dance will offer lessons in tap, ballet, gymnastics and jazz/hip hop.

The school is open six days a week from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Saturdays 8 a.m. until noon.

They also offer martial arts and yoga starting in March, and Gretchen Acker will be heading up Spinning classes.

"I have taught group fitness classes for over 36 years," Acker said. "I currently teach health education at West Holmes Middle School."

Certified in Madd Dogg Spinning, as well as dance aerobics, kickboxing and Reebok Step, Acker has coached track and cross country for more than 20 years, and currently is a track and cross country official.

Acker pointed out that Jenyce has brought in nine Madd Dogg spinning bikes, the originator of the spinning bike concept.

"These are the best bikes on the market," she said. "They also have the most padded seats I’ve ever been on. Some days we’ll do speed work, some days we’ll do hills. We have a wide variety of workouts.

"Spinning is great for off-season athletes," Acker added. "I’ve trained several kids who went on to compete in college. It’s weight bearing and it doesn’t pound your legs. The knobs simulate flats, hill climbs and grades. It provides a very smooth, consistent resistance."

Spinning is a challenging workout, for beginners on up to super advanced elite outdoor riders.

Jenyce said parents are invited to do a spinning class while they drop their kids off for dance.

"This is for all ages, from 3 years old to whatever," Jenyce said. "You can do this for fun, it’s a stress reliever, or even a social event. I have adult classes in tap and hip hop. I start them at 3 years old, and I call it Learning with Fun. I have a tap-tumble class for kids where they do 20 minutes of tap and 20 minutes of tumbling. They get two subjects for the price of one and they find out what they like to do.

"I want to stress that I am here to help kids with sports, cheerleading or whatever," she continued. "They learn discipline, coordination and self esteem. I have helped many kids over the years be successful in their fields through dance. I’m not here to do a whole bunch of competitions."

She wants to offer a variety of options for dance students of all ages.

Jenyce started dancing when she was 3 years old and has been dancing ever since.

"My teacher was Bettene Winch. I studied every form of dance under Bettene, and I was with her, teaching for her and with her into my 30s," she said. "I trained at Kent State for three years and then I went to Akron University and got my associates degree in fine arts.

"A lot of my education was traveling all over the U.S. with my students and studying under master dance instructors," Jenyce continued. "Luigi, the father of jazz dance, was one of my instructors. Over the years, jazz has melded into hip hop, to help adapt to the times and how dance is moving forward. I also took lessons from Diane ‘Lady Di’ Walker, an American tap dancer whose career spanned broadway, television and film, and international competitions."

Keisha Allison, Jenyce’s granddaughter was her hip hop queen.

"I wanted her to be a Rockette in New York, but volleyball won over because she got a full ride to college," Jenyce said. "She was the right height and was a fabulous performer here. She’s a special ed teacher now.

"My daughter Tess Kinsey, who also teaches at West Holmes, is a teacher here and my other daughter, Ty Van Name, has helped spot in gymnastics and has always been my makeup artist and hairdresser," she continued.

"We have a four-week sign up. If they don’t like tap, the second week they can try ballet. If they don’t like that, they can try hip hop," she said. "They aren’t stuck in a class until they tell me they want to do at recital. Then they can’t change, because we’re working on a routine. So they can try a class to see how they like it."

West Holmes cheerleaders Morgan and Megan Mellor also are going to run some cheer clinics.
