4 new COVID-19 infections in Singapore; no locally transmitted cases for 9th consecutive day - CNA

SINGAPORE: Singapore reported four new COVID-19 cases as of noon on Thursday (Nov 19), said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

All the new cases were imported and were placed on stay-home notice or isolated upon their arrival in Singapore, said the ministry.

No locally transmitted cases were reported for the ninth consecutive day.

The sole symptomatic case reported on Thursday is a 68-year-old Singaporean man who returned from Indonesia. The man, known as Case 58343, was confirmed to have COVID-19 on Nov 18.

MOH said the man had experienced shortness of breath since Nov 11. However, he declared that he did not have any of the specified symptoms, including shortness of breath, in his health declaration form submitted for immigration clearance on Nov 17.

"Investigations are ongoing to assess if there has been any breach of our travel requirements. We urge everyone to continue to exercise social responsibility and will not hesitate to take enforcement actions against those who breach the rules," said the health ministry.

The other new cases include a permanent resident who returned from India and a work permit holder currently employed in Singapore who arrived from Indonesia.

The remaining case is a special pass holder who arrived from Montenegro to board a ship docked here as a crew member.

Six more cases have been discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities, bringing Singapore's total recoveries to 58,052.

There are 28 cases still in hospital. Of these, most are stable or improving with one patient in the intensive care unit. Another 31 cases are being isolated and cared for at community facilities.

As of Thursday, Singapore has reported a total of 58,139 cases and 28 deaths from the disease.

US, EUROPE COULD APPROVE VACCINE NEXT MONTH

Pfizer and BioNTech said they could secure emergency US and European authorisation for their COVID-19 vaccine next month after final trial results showed a 95 per cent success rate and no serious side effects.

The vaccine's efficacy was found to be consistent across different ages and ethnicities – a promising sign given the disease has disproportionately hurt the elderly and certain groups.

The US could grant emergency use by the middle of next month, and conditional approval in the EU could be secured in the second half of December, BioNTech said.
