We knew Shakira had some serious Colombian dancing coming our way when we saw her introduce dancer Liz Dany Campo Díaz on Instagram.
“Do you want to meet the woman who taught me how to dance champeta?” Shakira asks in a video. “This 18-year-old kid, from Barranquilla, is my teacher! She’s fantastic, a hard worker, she supports her entire family and she’s taught me so many things.”
Those “things” were seen around the world when Shakira danced during the Super Bowl halftime show, performing champeta -- a genre with African roots from Colombia’s Atlantic coast -- to the tune of “Waka Waka.”
It wasn’t the only Colombian rhythm Shakira proudly brought to the world stage. Earlier in the program, she danced Mapalé, another Afro-Colombian dance known for its rapid movements.
And if you were wondering where those impressive salsa couples who performed with J.Lo came from? It’s Colombia again. They belong to Swing Latino, a salsa school in Cali, the city widely recognized as the “capital of salsa” in Latin America and home to a particularly fast style of dancing.
