New Saginaw dance studio aims to inspire all to embrace dance and differences - MLive.com

SAGINAW, MI — Twelve-year-old Shianna Wilson beams with joy and confidence when she’s dancing and is able to execute the perfect groove to a beat.

On Monday, Jan. 20, Wilson showed off her moves with a dance routine to “Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor Swift, with instructor and owner, Kraig Kramer of Body Rock Movement Downtown Saginaw.

The pair, completely in sync, performed the original routine in chairs.

Shianna takes a class called Chair Groove. It’s a class where students who may have mobility issues dance in their chairs to help them achieve confidence, learn about how their body moves and have fun.

The business, located at 128 N. Washington Ave., also offers tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, contemporary and classical dance classes.

“I created my company because I want to give everyone the freedom to have a moment in the spotlight, to be able to soar,” Kramer said. “To be able to work on looking at yourself in the mirror and saying that I’m beautiful, saying that I got this. It builds confidence.”

Shianna is a seventh grader at Zilwaukee School. She has brachial plexus and cerebral palsy. She’s had both conditions since she was born. She said brachial plexus makes it difficult to move her arm and she doesn’t have much feeling in it.

Despite her disabilities, it doesn't stop her from dancing or conquering any obstacles.

“Ever since I took the class, I feel like I can do anything and it helps me," she said.

Lakesha Wilson, Shianna’s mom has also noticed a boost in her daughter’s confidence.

The rest of the world got a glimpse of what the dance studio is all about when a video of Shianna and Kramer dancing was posted to Facebook. The video has garnered over 10,000 views.

“She’s definitely come out of her shell,” Shianna’s mom said.

Kramer has been dancing since he was 2 years old and teaching since 10. He compares music and dance to a sort of medicine.

“Miracles can come when you are put in a situation where you not only have to step beyond what you’re used to - not being comfortable is the greatest thing. But then, when you do something you never thought you were able to do before," he said.

Kramer said one of the goals for the class is to help people achieve something they didn’t think they could do.

The studio offers classes for everyone and is taking registrations. Classes start at $40. For more information, call 989-717-1477 or visit its Facebook page.
