WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI -- Many Daddy Daughter Dances typically take place in schools and city recreation centers is the area and state around Valentine’s Day.
Saline Recreation, Ypsilanti Township Recreation and Meri Lou Murray Recreation Center in Ann Arbor all are hosting dances this year that are open to the public, each with ts own unique twist. See the details below.
Saline Recreation will host two Daddy Daughter Dances on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7-8, each beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the recreation center, 1866 Woodland Dr. The dance is sponsored by the Saline Masons – which is providing a coat check.
This is the 25th year of daughters in dresses and dads in business to casual attire.
This year’s theme is Candyland. There will be a desert bar, games, dancing, and crafts all night. One of the games is a questionnaire on how well you know your daughter and dad.
The annual balloon drop, sponsored by Party Central, will close the night.
“I’ve seen families who have participated in this event since their daughters were little, and now their daughters are almost teenagers,” said Sunshine Lambert, Saline Recreation manager.
Tickets are $30, with $10 for each additional daughter.
Paid-photography will also be available.
Ypsilanti Township Recreation -- Feb. 8
Head to the Ypsilanti Township Community Center, 2025 E. Clark Road, for a Daddy Daughter Dance at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8. This five-hour event offers dancing, refreshments and paid-photography.
Tickets are $30.
“We feel like it’s a good event for a dad and a daughter to spend some quality time together,” said Angela Verges, recreation director.
Daughters from the age 3 to 13 normally attend the event. There is no specific attire, but since the creation of the dance in 1998, event planners said they have seen it all.
“They dress in all different ways,” said Verges. “We’ve even seen couples come in a limo together.”
All daughters will receive a gift.
Meri Lou Murray Recreation Center -- Feb. 15
Everyone is welcome to participate in an arrangement of activities at this 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. event on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Meri Lou Recreation Center, 2960 Washtenaw Ave. There’s a photo booth, a balloon twister, face painting, refreshments, dancing and crafts.
There also will be Disney princesses for kids to meet.
Tickets are at $20 a couple, with $5 per extra person in attendance.
“I think that, especially around Valentine’s Day, people want to spend time with loved ones,” said Sarah Walls, park manager. “While we call it the Daddy Daughter Dance, we are also open to mothers coming in – sons – we’ve had a mixture of people.”
Attire ranges from business casual to formal, but sometimes people come in jeans, Walls said.
