Last week’s “Dancing with the Stars” was kind of like a scary movie: Ally Brooke and Sailor Brinkley-Cook surprisingly landed in the bottom two and waited for the judges to drop the axe on one of them. It was Brinkley-Cook who ended up getting killed off, much to everyone’s horror. Well, tonight was “Halloween Night,” but maybe it had a happier ending? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
Eight contestants went in, but how many of them made it out alive? Kel Mitchell and Sean Spicer both performed jives. Lauren Alaina and the aforementioned Ally Brooke performed tangos — for Lauren it was the Argentine variety. The other four celebs were tasked with jazz (Hannah Brown), rumba (Kate Flannery), paso doble (Karamo Brown) and Viennese waltz (Mirror Ball front-runner James Van Der Beek).
But that’s not all. After their individual dances the eight contestants were split down the middle to perform two different team routines. In typical seasons there’s a relatively even distribution of underdogs and favorites, but this time around one team got all the heavy-hitters. Team Trick included top-scoring celebs James, Ally and Hannah along with fellow standout Lauren. Team Treat got low-scoring Karamo and Sean along with dark horse contenders Kel and Kate.
Team Trick seemed to have the obvious advantage since it had the most dancing firepower among its celebs, but that could cut both ways. The judges would naturally have higher expectations for the Tricksters, which could lead to disappointment. Also, everyone loves an underdog, so since entertainment value matters just as much as technique during team dancers, the door was open for a Treaters upset.
So who scared up the highest scores, and whose dance hopes died at the end? Follow along below starting at 8:00pm (times listed are Eastern).

Daniel Montgomery, 8:01pm — I wish the coffin in this opening numbered carried this season’s voting system. But I am digging this “Bad Guy” remix opening number. I’d probably like just about anything set to that song, though.
Kel Mitchell and Witney Carson (Jive)
DM, 8:05pm — A “Rocky Horror” jive to “Time Warp.” That sounds like an awesome song choice, but Witney is choreographing a routine where they’re both snakes. I’m not sure how that fits the “Rocky Horror” motif, but I’m open to the idea.
DM, 8:08pm — Some really decent moments in that jive, which got better as it went along. I give the dance a B+, but the production design an A.
Cordell Martin, 8:08pm — That was fun.
JK, 8:08pm — Kinetically energetic.
JUDGES — Len Goodman told Kel, “You were rocking, and I was reeling.” He was worried about Kel’s feet at first, but they turned out to be sharp and clear. Bruno loves that they “reimagined” a cult classic and made it “original” and “imaginative” and a “Halloween treat.” Carrie Ann Inaba thought it was “incredible,” tentative at first, but then “so tight and so clean” after Kel got a better idea of the space.
SCORES — Carrie Ann (9), Len (9), Bruno (9) — TOTAL: 27 out of 30
JK, 8:11pm — Though no points for that technical mishap with the camera placement on the judges.
DM, 8:11pm — I liked that performance, but those 9s were high, especially to start the night. We’re in for a lot of inflated numbers.
CM, 8:11pm — WOW, definitely see the judges making a statement tonight.
James Van Der Beek and Emma Slater (Viennese Waltz)
DM, 8:14pm — Last week James allayed any fears Emma had about choreographing a samba for a celebrity, which is huge praise. They’re dancing a Viennese waltz to “I Put a Spell on You” by Annie Lennox. James is playing a demon who wants to break up Emma’s relationship. I like Emma casting James as a sinister figure. He think he’ll be able to do sexy/creepy really well.
JK, 8:18pm — I thought James and Emma both just did a marvelous job this week.
DM, 8:18pm — Fantastic choreography, great character work, and some of James’s best technique yet.
CM, 8:18pm — He better get some 10s!
JUDGES — Bruno says James is like “the prince of darkness, mesmerizing.” It was a “powerful performance,” but he went wrong at one point; James explains that he “slipped on the fog.” Carrie Ann is “bawling” for him because it was “perfection” until the mistake with the fog and one semi-lift. Len thought the dance was “terrific” with “great footwork”; it was “going to be a 10” until the minor error.
CM, 8:20pm — Never mind, three 9s.
SCORES — Carrie Ann (9), Len (9), Bruno (9) — TOTAL: 27 out of 30
JK, 8:21pm — Three 9s it is!
Ally Brooke and Sasha Farber (Tango)
DM, 8:25pm — Ally was afraid her entire journey might be over after landing in the bottom two last week. Ridiculous result, and I’m glad she’s still around. Sasha needs Ally to be “fearless” in tonight’s tango, and after last week’s close call she’s got nothing to lose. Sasha says, “It’s nothing but tango,” so it sounds like the kind of choreographic content Len will like.
DM, 8:28pm — I loved the Harley Quinn “Sweet but Psycho” theme. And Ally’s footwork was great too.
JK, 8:28pm — Ally and Sasha I thought were incredible just now.
JUDGES — Carrie Ann thought it was “ridiculously good,” and she admires how Ally pushes herself to the edge, but Ally lost her focus for “one tiny second.” Len is glad that Ally has “really come back to life with a terrific tango,” and he loved Sasha’s choreography like I expected, but Ally tilted her head back a little too much. Bruno thought it was a “premier-league” dance with great choreography, thought she lost balance for a moment.
SCORES — Carrie Ann (9), Len (9), Bruno (9) — TOTAL: 27 out of 30
JK, 8:32pm — So far, everyone has been getting a 27 out of 30.
DM, 8:32pm — Three in a row at the exact same score. This is why I don’t like when the scores are so high so early in the night. Not enough room for even the slightest variation in the scores.
Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten (Jazz)
DM, 8:37pm — Hannah got decent 8s last week, but Hannah is discouraged because other dancers passed her on the leaderboard, which left her near the bottom of the pack. Tonight Hannah is playing an undead beauty queen dancing to “Bad Girls” by Donna Summer. I love the idea of them doing a creepy twist on her pageant persona. Sounds like a good way to lean into what she’s good at while mixing it up a bit.
JK, 8:40pm — Hannah & Alan just did what I thought was a great routine.
CM, 8:40pm — Yeah, definitely not a 10 routine.
DM, 8:40pm — The choreography isn’t quite doing it for me like I hoped, and Hannah is giving me all pageant girl and none of the ghoulish quality I would have liked.
JUDGES — Len thought it was “full-on” and “terrific,” “giving it plenty of welly.” Bruno called it “lively and theatrical,” but he wants to syncopation to be a lot sharper — she needs to “punch it!” Carrie Ann says, “There’s something lacking in your performance.” She feels Hannah is “disconnected” from the movements when Carrie Ann wants to get to know her better on the dance floor.
CM, 8:42pm — Preach Carrie Ann!
DM, 8:43pm — Carrie Ann hit it right on the head. She has the ability, but she’s not selling it. She needs to train one week with James. She needs an acting class more than a dance class. She’s got the moves, she needs the attitude.
SCORES — Carrie Ann (8), Len (9), Bruno (8) — TOTAL: 25 out of 30
CM, 8:45pm — Watch she’ll get an Argentine Tango next week and kill it!
DM, 8:45pm — I think she’d be great at Argentine tango.
JK, 8:45pm — Unless she ends up shockingly getting eliminated tonight.
CM, 8:46pm — She shouldn’t be eliminated tonight over Karamo and Sean.
DM, 8:47pm — Until Sean is gone, any elimination is the wrong elimination.
Karamo Brown and Jenna Johnson (Paso Doble)
DM, 8:48pm — Karamo had a good contemporary routine last week, but the paso doble involves a lot of serious technique, and he has had trouble with technique in the past. Tonight they’re dancing to “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child, and the delighted scream from Karamo suggests he’ll have no trouble connecting to the material at least.
DM, 8:51pm — That was a downright decent paso. A little rough in a couple of places. His technique could still use some work, but he sold it.
JK, 8:51pm — I thought that was pretty solid.
CM, 8:52pm — Wow, me too. I thought he brought the intensity to the dance.
JUDGES — Bruno thought there was “no lack of power and purpose.” He “went on the wrong foot once,” though, and he needs to be careful not to lose the shaping. Carrie Ann thought he was like a “sonic boom.” He “opened up and let it rip.” Len liked the “attack” and “intensity,” but he echoes Bruno’s criticisms about Karamo’s shaping.
SCORES — Carrie Ann (9), Len (8), Bruno (8) — TOTAL: 25 out of 30
DM, 8:54pm — That 9 from Carrie Ann was high. I think 8s would have been just right.
Lauren Alaina and Gleb Savchenko (Argentine Tango)
DM, 8:59pm — From last week’s sensitive contemporary routine to this week’s vampiric tango to “Whatever Lola Wants.” I love this dance style, and I think it’ll be a great opportunity to see more “tension and aggression” from Lauren.
CM, 9:00pm — Time for Lauren to step it up.
